What You Need to Know About Canadian Music and Musicians

src="http://pagead2.googlesyndication.com/pagead/show_ads.js"> Unfortunately, most of us here in the United States are not known bliss of performers who are not hail from one of the 50 states. Ask the average Joe on the street, if they know that every Canadian musicians, and if you receive a reply, you will hear Celine Dion or Shania Twain, maybe even Bryan Adams or Neil Young. While these are certainly talented musicians in their own right, they are not even the width and depth of the Canadian music scene. Some of the ignorance is due to the cultural similarities between us and our neighbours to the north. Pop / punk sensation Avril Lavigne is so popular with the tweener here in the United States, precisely because they see and hear, as they would have stepped down from a high school campus in the middle of America. But apart from such superstars as Alanis Morissette and Rush who have overcome all national boundaries and truly international, Canadian musicians have much to offer the world in terms of the exciting and fresh music. I have a few suggestions in the various categories, and perhaps with a casual listen, you will discover, as I was that the Great White North has more to offer than a few tasty brews.

Rock / pop / hip-hop

Where would any serious discussion of contemporary Canadian rock without including Nickelback, originally from Hanna, Alberta, but now based in Vancouver. With smash hits like Photograph " " " and How You Remind Me ", it is difficult to come with a successful Canadian group in the last few years. Ontario based Shaker is an up-and-coming act that is beginning to show great promise. Her first full-length version, " Throw Your Good Side On ", is scheduled to appear this year (2006). Shaker reminds me of a less bluesy version of " " The Black Crows, but the inflection of singer Daniel Brooks is like nothing so much as a latter-day version of fellow Canadian singer Tom Cochrane. Nelly Furtado continues to impress with their latest effort, " Loose ". As usual for Furtado, they continue to explore new ways with their songwriting and looks to continue well into the future. Vancouver based Jakalope is an interesting plot, which is not specified, alternately sounding like everything from The Smashing Pumpkins to Evanesence to a meth & 39; ed to Madonna, they never fail to be interesting. In the world of hip-hop, no Canadian group seems now as a superstar Dead Celebrity Status. Her first album, Music " " Blood on the streets too great reviews. Originally founded as a duo, Project Wyze, in 1988, they have since added mix-master DJ Dopey and shared a stage with Ozzy Osbourne and Public Enemy. Their impressive achievements they have the juice to add appearances by Dave Navarro, Joss Stone and Bif Naked to their recordings. I do not mention, Crash Test Dummies, one of the most promising bands from Winnipeg, because of the uncertainty about their future status. They were enormously influential from the mid-1990 until their last release in 2004. It is unfortunate that artistic differences seem to have taken its toll on the dummies.

Country / folk singer

Canadian have tremendous advances in country music in recent years and expressed gloomy Kathleen Edwards is no exception. Their 2005 album " Back to Me " won her critical applause in the USA, on the David Letterman and Jay Leno shows and opening for Bob Dylan and the Rolling Stones. No less interesting, but decided more alternative, the Cowboy Junkies have made a career, from the Country Music on the head. From sultry rendition of Patsy Cline& 39;s & 39; " Walking After Midnight " on their 1998 2005 1970-protest anthems of Dylan and Lennon. Ontario bred painful Angels is certainly one of the most interesting countries come together to acts in recent years. Blending new beats, along the lines of the country-pop sounds by Keith Urban, the Dixie Chicks, the sharp sounds of the early 1970 & 39; country music. Unfortunately, their once promising career seems to have stalled with the entry of singers Charlie Angus in the political arena - was elected to parliament in 2004. It is hoped that after Mr. Angus has his term that he will return to the music again, but this time, the prospect remains uncertain. One can not forget the irrepressible kd Lang, but refers to it as a purely country would act in the sale of its short. Lang is amazing singing talents were so far on everything from contemporary to country to pop torch songs and back. Their versatility and vocal range are legendary, and not the list of Canadian musicians would be complete without them.

Other

Alas, this article is too short to really inclusive, but I could not take place without the listing of two of my all-time favorites. Sue Foley and Diana Krall are two of the most impressive musical talent Canada has to offer, and as a citizen of the United States, Canada, I thank you for this wonderful two chanteuses. Foley, a blues guitarist / singer / songwriter from Ottawa, honed their chops primarily in Austin, Texas, but strangely enough, is rarely recognized except in the United States under the blues enthusiasts. A true virtuoso on his guitar with an unusual, but charming reedy quality of her voice, she has managed to impress some of the biggest names in the industry, including BB King, Buddy Guy and Koko Taylor. Sue & 39;& 39;s latest CD, " " New Used Car (2006) was recently published to excellent reviews. Diana Krall, comes from Vancouver, is so lovingly to them because they heard. Charming is the best way to describe their hypnotizing smooth jazz sound. They really broke through in the USA in 2000, when she toured with Tony Bennett. Her work with Elvis Costello (married, in 2003) to further increase its popularity. Although she currently resides in New York, has her Canadian citizenship and was received and officer of the Order of Canada in 2005.
